Whether you’re obsessed with windmills or the canals meandering through the land, cycling in Holland is one of the best biking adventure you’ll ever experience. Below, we’ve put together a list of the top bicycle routes through the Netherlands.
You don’t need to be nervous about cycling in Holland. If you’re a beginner, you’ll enjoy an incredible number of dedicated bike paths through polders or flat-land masses. Starting in Veere, you feel like you took a trip back in history and you ride mostly at sea level or below it. You cycle along canals on a dedicated bicycle path before arriving in Middelburg, the capital of the province of Zeeland. Take a break in town before you get back on your bike for the last portion of your cycling route toward Schore. With 450 ft. in elevation gain for the entire ride, you feel like a pro cyclist.
You might feel the wind here. From Schore to Yerseke, you ride on dedicated bike paths along the shores. Even though you stay on flat ground, you might find this ride quite challenging. For the first 16 miles, you stay by the seaside. You then head inland toward Heinkenszand, a good place for a break. Later, you ride through northern part of Zeeland. Later, you arrive in Yerseke, famous for its Mussel festival. End your bike ride and take the time to visit Yerseke.
Once again, you won’t have to challenge yourself on some steep hills, here. Get on your bicycle in Kinderdijk and follow a bike path through the amazing nineteen windmills. On the way, you may take a break and visit one of the windmills. Then, cycle down to the city of Gouda, famous for its Gouda cheese. Take a break in town to sample, buy and indulge at a local shop so that you can really feel like a local. The rest of the ride takes you just outside of The Hague, home to the U.N.’s International Court of Justice. If you got the legs, cycle all the way into the town.
Here you cycle through the “Beverly Hills” of Holland. As you leave The Hague, you head toward the shore for a beautiful bike ride through lush farmland and coastal dunes. You cycle through the lowlands. Keep cycling through Noordwijk and past lush farmlands all the way in the town of Lisse. You may enjoy a break here before a visit of the Keukenhof gardens, a 7-acre park with seven million flowers. Later, jump back on your bicycle before passing through tulip fields in every color of the rainbow to the quaint town of Haarlem.
With almost 1’000 ft. in elevation gain, you have a small cycling challenge ahead. Following the first few miles, you take a ferry to leave the town of Ijmuiden. As you cycle on small roadways and only come across a few vehicles, you can be one with the flora and fauna. You enjoy a peaceful bike ride through the verdant countryside, meandering canals and coastal forest. Later, you arrive in Alkmaar, well known for its traditional cheese market. Then, head back the way you came and once again ride through the Zuid-Kennemerland National Park sand dunes before arriving back in Haarlem.
Coming here, you won’t feel the distance as you gaze out on those sand dunes near the North Sea. Cycling around Holland is an adventure you’ll never forget.
