Itinerary

Day 1: Meet your trip leaders in Bari and transfer to Ostuni for lunch

From Ostuni to Fasano (26 miles)
Welcome to Puglia and the city of Bari. You may have been in Italy for a few days already and you might have taken the time to visit Bari. Perfect because it’s time to transfer to one of the most stunning cities in southern Italy, Ostuni. Once in town, your guides lead you to one of the best restaurants in Ostuni for a light lunch and a brief introduction to the trip. Following lunch, you have some free time to walk through the town and visit the Ostuni cathedral before meeting your leaders for the first ride of the week. Cycle toward your hotel, the Masseria Torre Maizza, passing through the town of Cisternino.

Day 2: Ride to Alberobello and visit its trulli before a wine tasting at a local masseria

From Fasano to Fasano (35 miles)
Enjoy a nice breakfast on the terrace of your masseria, the Masseria Torre Maizza, before a nice ride toward the town of Alberobello. Cycle through a spectacular landscape covered with millions of olive trees and thousands of trulli. Reach the town and meet with a local guide for a visit of the Alberobello trulli houses. Later in the afternoon, it’s time to taste wine during a fun wine tasting. Join a sommelier for a lesson covering the attributes of wine, the different types of wines and some of the wine tasting basics.

Day 3: Cycle through olive groves and stay in Matera

From Fasano to Matera (35 miles)
Today takes you on a bicycle ride through olive groves that cover both sides of the route you cycle on. You won’t be traveling during the olive harvest as it only starts at the beginning of November and we don’t run trips that late in the season. However, it is not needed as Italian olive groves are spectacular year-round. In the afternoon, arrive in the town of Matera. Take the time to settle in your room before a local guide takes you on a visit of the Sassi of Matera and the Matera cave dwellings.

Day 4: Ride your bike to Monopoli

From Gioia del Colle to Monopoli (28 miles)
Wake up in Matera and start cycling toward the coast. Once again, you ride through olive orchards on your way to Monopoli. In the afternoon, arrive at your masseria nestled among majestic olive trees. In the evening, you may transfer to the old city of Monopoli for a visit of the Castello Carlo V and the Monopoli cathedral.

Day 5: Visit Polignano a Mare and walk along the Adriatic coast

From Monopoli to Monopoli (36 miles)
Start your day with a ride a few miles away from the Adriatic coast as you head toward Polignano a Mare. Cycle through the towns of Castellana Grotte and Conversano before arriving in Polignano, a town located on the Adriatic Sea. Lunch is on your own today so choose one of the many Polignano a Mare restaurants or ask your leaders for recommendations. Before cycling back to your hotel, take a walk along the Adriatic coastline.

Day 6: End your week through Southern Italy or stay a few more day to visit more of the Heel of Italy

End of the trip
Today is unfortunately the last day of your trip through Southern Italy also referred as the heel of Italy or Italy’s boot. This has been an amazing adventure and you’ve learn so much about Italy’s food and Italy’s culture. Your leaders drive you to the Bari train station. However, if you wish to stay a few more days in the high heel of Italy’s boot you may ask our office for recommendations.

*Please note that the mileage indicated above refers to the basic route, which is the one that 85% of our guests ride. However, we offer multiple daily routes and you may read more about it in the Activity level section below or by clicking the detailed itinerary button above.
