Itinerary

Day 1: Meet in Blois and transfer to Chaumont before following the Loire a velo

From Chaumont-sur-Loire to Amboise (19 miles)
Meet at the train station in Blois. If you arrive a day early, our recommendation is that you visit the Blois castle, which was once the residence of several French kings. Head toward the town of Chaumont sur Loire where lunch is served inside the Chaumont castle. This is the starting location of your bike tour and also where you join the Loire a velo, a biking trail that follows the Loire river over the course of 800 km.

Day 2: Cycle from Amboise to the Chateau de Chenonceau, located on the river Cher

From Amboise to Amboise (28 miles)
This morning, ride your bicycle to Chenonceau and the famous chateau de Chenonceau, a French castle over the Cher river which was the home to Catherine de Briçonnet, the wife of Thomas Bohier who purchased the chateau when it was in ruins in the 15th century. Before lunch, take the time to walk through the beautiful Chenonceau gardens. In the afternoon, cycle back to Amboise, a town famous for the castle of Amboise and the Clos Luce, where Leonardo da Vinci spent the last 3 years of his life. Later that day, visit the small residence of Cloux (Clos-Lucé) where you can see models of airplanes and helicopters designed by da Vinci.

Day 3: Take a self-guided tour of Villandry prior to reaching the town of Chinon

From Villandry to Marçay (36 miles)
Shuttle to the chateau de Villandry for for self-guided tour of the Villandry gardens. The famous gardens are laid out in formal patterns created with low box hedges. From there bike to the town of Crissay-sur -Manse for a self guided walk through the town. Continue on to the chateau du Rivau, a fortress dating back to the 13th century before ending the day at the chateau de Marcay, a 15th century castle located on the outskirts of Chinon. In the evening, diner is on your own in Chinon, the town where Joan of Arc asked French king Charles VI to grant her an army to relieve the siege of Orléans.

Day 4: Discover Azay-le-Rideau before a wine tasting in the surroundings of Chinon

From Marçay to Marçay (47 miles)
Ride your bicycle toward Azay-le-Rideau and the chateau d’Azay-le-Rideau, a renaissance castle located on an island in the middle of the Indre river. Later on, take the time to visit Rigny-Usée before heading back to your hotel for a wine tasting. The sommelier takes you on a tour of the cellars before you join the tasting event.

Day 5: Ride your bike to Saumur and its famous chateau overlooking the Loire

From Marçay to Saumur (31 miles)
Cycle to the town of Candes-Saint-Martin, listed as one of France most beautiful villages. Following lunch, ride to Saumur, a town surrounded by vineyards and famous for the local red wine, the best being the Saumur-Champigny. The town is also famous for its chateau, the Saumur castle built in the 10th century and overlooking the river Loire. The chateau is built out of tuffeau, a limestone used in the construction of the chateau de Chambord.

Day 6: End your trip in Tours

End of the trip
This morning and after a final breakfast together, your cycling tour along the banks of the longest river in France, commonly known as the Loire river, ends at the Tours train station. For those of you that are staying a few more days in the area, you may ask your trip leaders for the names of other famous French chateaux to visit but the Chateaux of Chambord and Cheverny are a must.

*Please note that the mileage indicated above refers to the basic biking route, which is the one that 85% of our guests ride. However, we offer multiple daily cycling routes and you may read more about it in the Activity level section below or by clicking the detailed itinerary button above.
