Itinerary

Day 1: Blois is your starting location

From Chaumont-sur-Loire to Amboise (19 miles)
Welcome to the Loire Valley. Your trip leaders are waiting in the town of Blois. Blois is known as the place where the treaty of Blois was signed on 19 April 1572. If time permits, you may visit the castle where Louis XII was born or the Blois cathedral. Then, your leaders give you a ride to Chaumont sur Loire. Lunch is served inside the castle before you head toward Amboise.

Day 2: You explore Chenonceau

From Amboise to Amboise (28 miles)
This morning, you enjoy a scenic ride to Chenonceau and the famous chateau de Chenonceau. Chateau Chenonceau is a French castle designed by French Renaissance architect Philibert de l’Orme. The Chenonceau castle was the home to Catherine de Briçonnet, the wife of Thomas Bohier who purchased the chateau when it was in ruins in the 15th century. Before lunch, take the time to walk through the town of Chenonceaux. This afternoon, Amboise is your destination. It is a town famous for its castle and the Clos Luce, where Leonardo da Vinci spent the last 3 years of his life. Later that day, you visit the small residence of Cloux (Clos-Lucé) where you can see models of airplanes and helicopters designed by Da Vinci.

Day 3: You take a nice ride toward Chinon

From Villandry to Marçay (36 miles)
You enjoy a nice ride to the chateau de Villandry for for self-guided tour of the Villandry gardens. The famous gardens are laid in formal patterns and created with low box hedges. Later that morning, you take a bike ride to the town of Crissay-sur-Manse for a self guided walk through the town. You continue biking to reach the chateau du Rivau, a fortress dating back to the 13th century before ending the day at the chateau de Marcay, a 15th century castle located on the outskirts of Chinon. In the evening, diner is on your own in Chinon, the town where Joan of Arc asked French king Charles VI to grant her an army to relieve the siege of Orléans. You should definitely try chinon wine. You may ask your leaders for recommendations of Chinon wines.

Day 4: You discover Azay-le-Rideau

From Marçay to Marçay (47 miles)
Today’s ride take cyclists to Azay-le-Rideau and the chateau d’Azay-le-Rideau. The Renaissance castle of Azay le Rideau is situated on an island in the middle of the Indre river. Later on, you visit Rigny-Usée. You then head back to your hotel for a wine tasting. The sommelier takes your group on a tour before you participate in a wine tasting.

Day 5: Saumur is your destination for the day

From Marçay to Saumur (31 miles)
Today, you take a ride to the town of Candes-Saint-Martin, one of France most beautiful villages. Following lunch, Saumur is your destination. The town is surrounded by vineyards and famous for the local red wine, the best being the Saumur-Champigny. Also, it is famous for the Saumur castle, a 10th century chateau overlooking the river Loire. The chateau is built out of tuffeau, which is a limestone used in the construction of the chateau de Chambord.

Day 6: You end your trip through the Loire Valley region in Tours

End of the trip
This morning and after a final breakfast together, your cycling tour comes to an end in the town of Tours. For those of you that are staying a few more days in the area, you may ask your trip leaders for the names of other famous French chateaux to visit but the Chateaux of Chambord and Cheverny are a must. You may also head back to Paris and visit the Château de Versailles. The Palace of Versailles is also referred as the Versailles Palace. It is one of the most famous French châteaux.

How to get to the starting location

  • Buy your train ticket(s) from Paris to Blois on www.raileurope.com
  • Make sure to check online for any timetable changes or railway company track maintenance
