If you managed to take an international flight to Europe, you’ll have absolutely no difficulties going by train within Europe – even if you only speak English.
How do I find the station?
Train stations in Europe are very accessible and easy to find. Although the actual station addresses are generally not listed, all stations are centrally located and conveniently reached via public transportation and by most airport city center links. If you’re already in town, just ask your hotel concierge for a local map and the best directions. Pressed for time? Taxi drivers know how to get you to your station fast and worry-free.
How early should I arrive at the station?
It is always best to give yourself ample time rather than rushing, especially in a new environment. We recommend that you arrive at the station at least 30 minutes prior to your departure. This allows you enough time to clear any security check and catch your train. If it is a large station and you need to validate your rail pass, you will probably want to arrive even earlier to ensure that you get to where you need to go with time to spare.
How do I find my train?
It’s easy. At the train station, you’ll see large Departure and Arrival Boards located in the center of most stations. Simply match the train number and departure time on your reservation or ticket to the train number on the departure board. The platform number where you should go will be listed right next to it. Once on the platform you’ll notice that each car (also known as a coach) has a clear identification number on its side. Your reservation/ticket will list your car/coach number and your class of service.
Once onboard the proper car, you’ll find clearly labeled seat numbers. Simply match the seat number on your reservation / ticket. And of course, the station staff can always help point you in the right direction.

How far in advance can I buy my ticket?
Tickets can be purchased 60 to 120 days in advance depending on the route, or as little as 2 days prior to your departure from the USA, Caribbean, Central America, Mexico or Canada.
What do I do with my ticket or pass?
If you are traveling with a ticket, you must validate your ticket before you can board the train. If you have a pass, it must be validated at the station before your first travel day, and afterwards you can simply board the train. Be sure to fill in the date of each travel day on your pass before showing it to the conductor.
How do I validate my ticket?
You must electronically stamp your ticket in a pedestal located where you proceed to the quay or platform. Since there is often no conductor verifying your ticket once you are aboard, this is a form of honor system with potential penalties if a conductor or controller later discovers you are not respecting it.
What do I do with my luggage?
On the trains, you will find compartments available to store your luggage either upon entering the train cars or in overhead compartments. It’s best to clearly label all your luggage with your name to avoid any mix-ups. Rest assured, you will not have a problem finding a place to secure your belongings.
